BMSB Treatment — Common Questions

What is BMSB season and when does it apply?
Brown Marmorated Stink Bug (BMSB) season runs from 1 September to 30 April each year. During this period, cargo from high-risk countries is subject to mandatory treatment requirements before entering Australia or New Zealand. DAFF activates its BMSB import requirements annually based on pest risk data from target countries.
Which countries are on the BMSB target country list?
DAFF's BMSB target countries include Italy, France, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Georgia, Turkey, USA (eastern states), Canada, Japan, South Korea, China, and other European and North American countries where BMSB is established. The list is reviewed annually — check the DAFF BMSB page for the current season's target country list.
What treatment is required for BMSB? Heat treatment or fumigation?
BMSB treatment options approved by DAFF include heat treatment (56°C core temperature for 30 minutes) and fumigation with methyl bromide or sulfuryl fluoride. Treatment type depends on commodity and container type. Vehicles and machinery typically require heat treatment; break bulk and RoRo cargo may require methyl bromide fumigation. Treatment must be conducted at a DAFF-approved facility before Australian arrival.
How much does BMSB treatment cost?
BMSB treatment costs vary by container type and treatment method. Typical ranges: FCL containers $800–$1,200 for fumigation, $1,200–$1,800 for heat treatment. RoRo vehicles $200–$600 per unit. Break bulk cargo $1,500–$3,500 depending on volume. Costs are per treatment at the country of export — offshore treatment is required before Australian arrival.
What happens if my cargo arrives without BMSB treatment?
Untreated cargo from BMSB target countries arriving during BMSB season will be subject to direction by DAFF/MPI: re-treatment at Australian facilities at importer expense, re-exportation, or destruction. On-arrival treatment is significantly more expensive than offshore treatment — typically 2–4x the offshore cost. Vessels carrying untreated BMSB risk cargo may also be subjected to inspection causing significant port delays.
